Next Tests

I'm so sorry for the lapse in my tests/presence. http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=409848972393207718
Blogger: Apture Rapture - Create PostI got REALLY sick which set me back with school and work.

- Blog pages/index pages
- so far all of my links are appearing in both the blog page and the index page

-Random note: I'm finding that if I don't highlight a group of words in just the right manner (clicking until all words are selected rather than highlighting by running across a set of words) apture won't open a links window. Apparently, this doesn't happen when I have a block of words but only when I have one line of text by itself that I want to link see here
The only way I can add content is with the +add link at the end of the entry.

-I have been messing around and I added a screenshot of my friend's blog to his link in my "blogs I read" section. Now that I have done this, the only way for me to open the actual link to his page is to right click and select open. Can anything be done about this or is this what is desired?

Tristan's comments to my first post and my responses

Vanessa Round 1: plain text---Tristan Response: Italics---Vanessa Round 2: Bold

- I think a note with the bookmarklet reminding users that they can add this to their Firefox window where it is permanently visible would be useful.

it's hard because the insturctions to add the bookmarklet are different for every browser, and drag & drop isn't always supported, etc. where do you think this note should go, and how would you recommend communicating it?

~Perhaps you could have a link under the bookmarklet that says "how to make the bookmarklet work for you" or something shorter that takes you to a page with more detailed instructions?

- I think it needs to be emphasized somewhere that you can add multiple media to ONE piece of highlighted text. Tristan had to remind me of this.

we're changing it so that the linker window stays open when you add new media, so that after you create the link to text on the page, the link is created, the window for it opens, and the linker panel moves to the side of the window but stays open, and goes back to the other search results so you can keep adding more related media. it doesn't close until you explicitly click the (x) button. we hope this will help people understand that they can link webs of stuff together. what do you think?

~I like this idea a lot. I'll continue to come up with more detailed thoughts on this as I use apture.

- If you look at my other blog (Life Isn't a Dress Rehearsal), the post about articles mentioning TFA has issues. Whichever chunk of text I put at the end aka next to the "add link..." will not launch an apture window to add content.

this is a bug, thanks for finding it. i'm not sure why it happens, but i'll file it and hopefully it'll be fixed soon. i think in general the end of paragraphs links are a little flaky.

- I would really like a way to minimize/resize/reshape the dashboard pop-up. The only current choice is the X.

how do you think this should work? like a minu (-) button to collapse the thing into a "editing on/off" toggle, and then let you (+) restore it to the original size?

~ exactly. you know how we mac users think.

- Maybe this already exists and I just don't see it, but an area for a description or note for each site on the "my sites" list would be helpful especially when people start sharing managing privileges etc.

hmm, what do you mean here by description/note? as in, "blog de argentina" and the description is: "this is my blog from the six months i spent in argentina until summer 2007"?

~ That's exactly what I mean. I only think this is important because when people start sharing management capabilities with others they might end up with a long list of sites.

Loved-
*swap media is flawless
*the symbols used in the apture pop up window are very self-explanatory (except maybe embed for the technotard types)

great! what was wrong with the embed type? it's supposed to be a knockout of a cursor/arrow icon inside a black box to symbolize the general concept of "interactivity"... would you suggest something else instead?

~ eh, nevermind. The embed icon is fine.

Didn't like-
* not being able to delete one of my sites from apture

thanks-- filed a bug against this, working on it

* not being able to link to or embed a "my map"

lower priority for us given all the other features, but definitely something we'll support in the future

~ I just felt like this would be important for people who create maps for hiking trails, sailing, camping etc who blog about where they go/best places to go. This was the FIRST thing my grad student friend asked about when I showed her Apture.

* not being able to link directly to a google video (used embed instead)
should be fixed now, this was a bug

* When I look at an apture window (specifically like the one I made for Barron Orr on my LIDR blog), I don't like that it isn't really obvious that the "related media" is stuff that I have added.

yeah, this is a GREAT comment. in general, we want to let people tie webs of media toegether into little multimedia launchers (apture links), but right now it just says "Related Media" instead of "Related Media selected by Vanessa"... the problem is, because Apture is collaborative it could be the case that each realted link came from someone else.

we could change this so that the bottom of each window says someting like "(added by Vanessa)".. that way if you open each link, you can see who added it. however, would you want this feature on a per-site basis? on a per-link basis? on a per-page basis? we want to make this as simple as possible.. but maybe a site-wide setting in your Apture "My Sites" page would do the trick, right above the "Auto Link Settings" area, we could have a checkbox for "Cite Link Authors in Apture windows".

~ I like your ideas for authors and being able to set preferences for them. Right now, the "Related Media" title of that area just seems like perhaps that's just additional info that came up with the search or something rather than info I (or another editor) explicitly added there.
